Neptune354 available on V2 hardware

Hi, thanks to the hard work of Jim Halfpenny even V2 owners can use Neptune354!

Check out the download page

Next step will be to port Neptune354 to the Linksys HG200…we need a tester for this!
Say thanks to Jim!

I have upgraded my V2 with this modified firmware. So far so good. Thank you and Jim very much.

I would like to have some fixes for small interface layout glitches that shows up in Opera (didn’t checked any other browsers). Like in Administration -> Management tab and also in few other places.
Also, Administration -> Utility tab is only visible when Administration -> Management is active.

Also there is one feature that I’m missing since I bought this router.
I would like to wake up (WOL) my computer from Internet. For that to work, I should forward WOL packet to broadcast address (x.x.x.255). In interface (Applications
    & Gaming -> Single Port Forwarding), I can’t set *.255. I can only use 0-254.
Would it be possible to modify firmware to accept *.255 in address field? Another question is if this would work but this is something I can test.

Another thing that I though this firmware will fix is wifi problem that versions .57 and .58 introduced. Wifi range dropped from 4 bars to 1 after upgrading.
You are using .54 wifi drivers so I though that things will go back to good old days, but there is still only 1 range bar. Is downgrading to original .54 the only solution to this problem? And where I can find it?

Hi I use the firmware Neptune WAG354GV2_006 1_01_58 kernel by C@rciofone available in the download page or here: http://www.esnips.com/web/ConfigurazioneLinksysWAG354GV1V2/?flush=1 and the wireless range is fixed and ok. Is the auctor of your group?

  • Comment by diz POLAND | June 6, 2007 @ 9:38 pm

    Actually I’m using Neptune354V2_003 1.01.58 kernel.bin which, I think, is newer.
Weird thing with this wireless range becase I’ve gone back to 1.01.54 and it was still bad. Hmm, weird.

  • Comment by diz POLAND | June 6, 2007 @ 11:29 pm

    Testing Neptune354V2_003 1.01.58 kernel.bin again.
    When not connected: 4 bars.
When connected: drops to 1 and internet barerly works.

Sorry for the flood of messages but I’m happy to tell that Neptune WAG354GV2_006 1_01_58 kernel.zip fixed my wireless problems. Woohhoo.

But why I can’t generate private key for sshd?

  • Comment by Carciofone ITALY | June 7, 2007 @ 7:29 am

Hi DIZ. Do you have followed the following instructions?
    http://cyberstorm.altervista.org/?p=20

  • Comment by diz POLAND | June 7, 2007 @ 12:35 pm

    Actually I think I did.
I have disconnected RJ11 cable, disabled wifi, waited few minutes and tried but it never worked.
PPPoA is set to keep alive so it tries to connect all the time, maybe I should disable that too?

And can someone clarify who is who?
Are there three peoples involved in making of this firmware?
    Like:
    1) marco v
    2) Carciofone
    3) Jim Halfpenny
    ?

  • Comment by diz POLAND | June 7, 2007 @ 1:44 pm

    Maybe this is the reason:
    admin@neptune:/# cd /dev/mtdblock/4
-sh: cd: can’t cd to /dev/mtdblock/4
    ?

  • Comment by marco v ITALY | June 7, 2007 @ 2:10 pm

DIZ, sorry but I have not clarified things yet..
You can find 2 versions for V2:

Jim version. This version comes from the Neptune source code repository, and has all the features of Neptune. On the other side wireless seems to be poor, because it uses the 1.01.58 drivers…

Carciofone version. This version has been “independently” built by Carciofone, taking SOME of the code of Neptune. This means you’ll have better compatibility with V2, but not all features of Neptune are embedded.

  • Comment by Carciofone ITALY | June 7, 2007 @ 2:18 pm

Hi DIZ. Marcov it is the creator of the Neptune354 project. Jim is the first official developer for the V2 version. I’m an indipendent developer, and I know personally marcov.
In the Jim’s version the ssh access works correctly? Maybe only my version has the problem.

  • Comment by marco v ITALY | June 7, 2007 @ 2:28 pm

    Now, about WOL.
WOL command is in the official Neptune354 (for V2 the one by Jim), it can be launched via command line:
    ether-wake 00:11:22:33:44:55
with 00:11:22:33:44:55 the MAC address of the machine.

In order to wake up your router from the Internet, at now the only possible way is to login using ssh and then use the ether-wake command.
It is not a good idea to forward packets to a broadcast address…

  • Comment by diz POLAND | June 7, 2007 @ 6:45 pm

Thank you very much for info.
I have only tried Carciofone versions so maybe that’s the reason for ssh not working.
    Gotta try Jim’s version later.
WOL from SSH sound perfect for me. If I can only get ssh to work :)

  • Comment by diz POLAND | June 7, 2007 @ 10:03 pm

I’ve tested Jim’s version and key generation works without problems there.
I’ve checked both html code and header sent and they are the same. So something might be wrong in apply.cgi or there is no key generation functionality in Carciofone version.

Ok, thanks, I will see to fix the problem.

Seems like a great project, I have endless problems with my router which hopefully this firmware will fix…

one question/request though, any chance of you guys adding to the Applications & Gaming > Single Port Forwarding page? The lack of available entries is always very annoying when I’m sure the router could handle more, but the official firmware for some reason has such a limitation. +5 blank spare every time the page is loaded would be nice so you can add as many rules as you might ever need.

    Hi there,

This is a great project. I’ve tried the Neptune354V2_008 1.01.58 firmware and
it’s working much better than the official firmware
from linksys! Uptime so far: over 9 days!
Tiny problem i’ve noticed in the qos.asp page; the first
“specific port” box gives me an error (”Specific Port Illegal”) when i try to save the settings. The second
    “Specific Port” box works fine.
Also, are there any plans to integrate a simple captive portal (such as NoCatSplash / NoCatAuth) for displaying
a simple disclaimer page over an open wireless network?

    Keep up the good work!

  • Comment by marco v ITALY | June 22, 2007 @ 10:50 am

@MK: what NoCatSplash is used for? Is it for authenticating users before accessing the Internet?

@Babylon: yes, what you are asking for should be done.

  • Comment by MK UNITED KINGDOM | June 22, 2007 @ 4:14 pm

    Hey MARCO V

Yes kind of. Basically, i would like to allow anyone (authenticated as well as non-authenticated clients) to access the internet through my wifi router. Before i give them access to the internet, i would like them to agree not to not use it for illegal purposes. When they connect, they should be redirected to a web page showing a disclaimer, after they click “i Agree” they will be allowed to browse the internet.

    More info at http://nocat.net/

Anyway, thanks for the firmware, i would’ve threw the router in the rubish if i hadn’t found your firmware!

    Hi
I did try upgrade my modem and just after start upgrading, the modem give me anouncement “upgrade successful” but now the modem does’nt work. Can someone help me how I can fix my modem?

  • Comment by marco v ITALY | June 29, 2007 @ 7:56 pm

    Sure!
(if u put between the wag and your pc a switch/hub is better)

If u use linux read http://cyberstorm.altervista.org/?cat=7

    if u use windows xp:
Assign a static ip to your pc like 192.168.1.x ( x between 2 and 254)
Put a firmware image on the desktop and rename it upgrade_code.bin
    Start>Run>cmd
    cd Desktop
    tftp -i 192.168.1.1 PUT uprade_code.bin (press enter)
    plug your router main

wait some secs and u should get the answer of a successful transfer.

    if not, unplug/replug

  • Comment by marco v ITALY | June 29, 2007 @ 9:59 pm

the only thing i can tell u is dont give up and repeat until u have success. There arent other easy ways to recover.

  • Comment by Marecki UNITED KINGDOM | June 29, 2007 @ 10:37 pm

hi Carciofone, I tried the tool you linked (tftpd.exe). In my experience using it, it’s hard to guess the right time to put the firmware. Also the app is really bad written, both in design, in usability and information feedback.

I prefer far more using the command like both in linux/windows

    Hi, Marco.
You have reason, this program isn’t much good. A trick is to remove and to put the current to the router while the program runs.

  • Comment by C@rciofone ITALY | July 9, 2007 @ 10:02 am

@Babylon: fixed the problem in the qos feature in the new version of the firmware: http://www.esnips.com/web/ConfigurazioneLinksysWAG354GV1V2
